During any physical effort, where the abdominal muscles are contracted, the pressure on the bladder and pelvic floor is increased. In October 2010, Susan Pepper Arena was invited to present her medical studies of the pelvic floor and Pilates at an international conference for physical re-education, at the “Parc Floral” in Paris for “ORREK”. During this workshop, Susan will present her medical findings based on MRI video images taken during different muscular contractions and discuss in detail the importance of correct pelvic floor contractions during sport and Pilates. Susan will discuss the dangers of certain common exercises and specifically, incorrectly taught Pilates for the pelvic floor and she will discuss how incorrect postural habits can be a cause of incontinence. Susan will teach a series of exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor based on her medical studies.
